# How to check US vehicle, consumer product and food recalls across NHTSA, CPSC and openFDA in one place

Safety recalls in the United States sit in three separate government databases: NHTSA for vehicles, the CPSC for consumer products and baby gear, and the FDA for food, supplements, drugs and pet food. This guide shows how to check all three from one keyless MCP server or web page, compares our 2018 Honda Accord test run against two rival recall tools, and walks through real CPSC and FDA lookups from today's databases.

By OpenKrill. Published 2026-10-20. Every recall number, date and response time below comes from live calls to [Recall Check](https://tools.openkrill.app/tools/recalls) (`recalls.openkrill.app`) and the official NHTSA, CPSC and openFDA endpoints between 06:22 and 07:18 UTC on 2026-10-20.

## The short answer

Open [Recall Check](https://tools.openkrill.app/tools/recalls) or connect `https://recalls.openkrill.app/mcp` to your AI assistant. Use `check_vehicle_recalls` for cars and trucks, `search_product_recalls` for nursery gear, toys and home appliances, and `search_food_drug_recalls` or `search_pet_food_recalls` for food and medicine. Every tool is free, needs no API key, and returns the official campaign number, the hazard, the remedy and the government source link.

## What our 2018 Honda Accord test returned

We asked: "Does a 2018 Honda Accord have any open safety recalls?" In 1,227 ms, `check_vehicle_recalls` returned all 6 NHTSA recall campaigns on file for that model year, matching the raw NHTSA endpoint (`api.nhtsa.gov/recalls/recallsByVehicle`) word for word:

| Campaign | Reported on | Component | Hazard and remedy |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `26V332000` | 2026-05-21 | Front passenger air bag occupant classification sensor | Unintentional air bag deployment during a crash increases injury risk. Dealers replace the seat weight sensors free of charge (letters mailed 2026-07-07). |
| `23V858000` | 2023-12-18 | Fuel pump inside the fuel tank | Fuel pump failure can stall the engine while driving. Dealers replace the fuel pump module free of charge (expands 21V-215 and 20V-314). |
| `23V158000` | 2023-03-09 | Front seat belt buckle assembly | The buckle channel can interfere with the release button and prevent latching. Dealers replace the release buttons or buckle assemblies free of charge. |
| `20V771000` | 2020-12-10 | Body Control Module software | Communication drops can disable wipers, defroster, rearview camera or exterior lights. Dealers update the BCM software free of charge. |
| `20V314000` | 2020-05-28 | Low-pressure fuel pump | Fuel pump failure can stall the engine while driving. Dealers replace the fuel pump assembly free of charge. |
| `18V629000` | 2018-09-13 | Back-up camera display (FMVSS 111) | The center display may fail to show what is behind the car. Dealers reprogram the display audio software free of charge. |

All 6 campaigns carry `parkIt: false`, `parkOutside: false` and `overTheAirUpdate: false`. Because NHTSA lists vehicle recalls by model year, make and model and not by repair history, the response also notes that you must enter the 17-character VIN at [nhtsa.gov/recalls](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) to see whether a specific car has already had the free dealer repair.

## How Recall Check compared with rival tools

We ran the same 2018 Honda Accord query against three competing recall tools on 2026-10-20:

| Tool | Result on 2018 Honda Accord | Wall time | Score |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **OpenKrill Recall Check** | All 6 NHTSA campaigns with date, component, consequence, remedy, park advisories and NHTSA source URL | 1,227 ms | 10.0 / 10 |
| **cyanheads NHTSA Vehicle Safety MCP** | All 6 campaigns with component, consequence, remedy and advisories, but no source URL in the answer | 919 ms (3,200 ms with MCP handshake) | 9.5 / 10 |
| **Recalert** (`recalert.us`) | Free `search_recalls` tool returned an empty list (`resultados: []`); full records require paid credits | 1,613 ms | 4.9 / 10 |
| **recall-check-mcp** | Not run: README instructs `npx -y recall-check-mcp`, which returns HTTP 404 on npm | not run | not run |

## Checking CPSC baby products and FDA food recalls

Unlike vehicle-only servers, Recall Check also queries the Consumer Product Safety Commission and openFDA in the same format:

- **CPSC consumer products (`search_product_recalls`).** A search for `fisher-price` with `limit: 3` matched 57 CPSC recall notices on `saferproducts.gov`. The newest 3 were recall `25216` (2025-04-10, Tissue Box Toy sold with Fisher-Price 3-in-1 SnugaPuppy Activity Centers, model HLV78, choking hazard from small support brackets), recall `25215` (2025-04-10, Brunch & Go Stroller Toys, model HGB85, choking hazard from a cracking toy egg yolk), and recall `25009` (2024-10-10, 21 models of Fisher-Price Snuga Infant Swings, suffocation hazard after 5 reported deaths, with a 25-dollar refund for owners who remove and destroy the headrest and body support insert).
- **FDA food and drug enforcement reports (`search_food_drug_recalls`).** Searching `category: "food"` for `listeria` with `withinDays: 90` returned 0 matches and noted that recall descriptions often name the food rather than the pathogen. Searching `infant formula` across openFDA returned 58 matches, led by recall `H-1137-2026` (Class I, Ongoing, NARA ORGANICS INC Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula in 24.7 oz and 14.1 oz cans, initiated 2026-06-13 and reported 2026-07-08 for possible *Clostridium botulinum* contamination) and recall `H-0891-2026` (Class I, Terminated, The a2 Milk Company a2 Platinum Premium infant formula in 31.7 oz tins, reported 2026-06-10 for possible Cereulide toxin contamination).

## Mistakes to avoid when checking recalls

- **Treating a model-year recall list as a VIN check.** NHTSA's model-year list shows every recall issued for that car line, not whether your specific car was already repaired at a dealer. Confirm a specific VIN at [nhtsa.gov/recalls](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls).
- **Searching FDA recalls only by bacteria name with a tight day filter.** openFDA enforcement reports index the product description and reason for recall; search the brand or food category (such as `infant formula`) as well as the hazard.
- **Skipping the model number on CPSC recalls.** A nursery brand can have 50+ historical recalls across decades. Match the exact model number printed on the product tag or underside (such as `HLV78` or `HGB85`) against the CPSC notice.
- **Treating "no matches" as a safety guarantee.** Recall Check covers US federal databases only, and a recent recall can take days to reach the public APIs.
