# Citation Checker jobs

Each section below walks through one job with the tools of the `citations` MCP server. The same recipes are MCP prompts (prompts/list) on `https://api.openkrill.app/gateway/mcp`.
Connect the server at `https://citations.openkrill.app/mcp` in your MCP client settings (remote streamable HTTP, no key), then call its tools as normal tool calls. They are not command line programs: Bash, curl and scripts cannot reach them.

## Check references and DOIs

Job: Check references and DOIs, with the Citation Checker MCP server.

Use the `check_references` tool for this job.

Work on the user's request. If there is none yet, ask what they need. A request this job handles: "Verify this citation: Hochreiter, S., & Schmidhuber, J. (1997). Long short-term memory. Neural Computation, 9(8), 1735-1780."

Steps:
1. Call `check_references` as a normal MCP tool call, with the request's values in the fields of its inputSchema. It needs `references`.
2. If a value the tool needs is missing and you cannot tell it from the request, ask the user one short question first.
3. This input is known to work; copy its format, not its values: `{"references":["LeCun, Bengio, Hinton. Deep learning. Nature 521, 436-444 (2015). doi:10.1038/nature14539"]}`
4. For the request "Verify this citation: Hochreiter, S., & Schmidhuber, J. (1997). Long short-term memory. Neural Computation, 9(8), 1735-1780.", a correct answer looks like this: One entry, verdict found, source Crossref, title Long Short-Term Memory, DOI 10.1162/neco.1997.9.8.1735, year 1997, retraction status none_recorded.
5. Follow the server's own rules:
   - Use check_references when the user wants references, a bibliography, a citation or a DOI checked, or asks whether a paper was retracted.
   - Send each reference as one string as the user wrote it, up to 10 per call; split longer lists into several calls.
   - Report the verdict for every reference. found: a real record matches. mismatch: a real record exists but differences (doi, title, authors, year) say what the reference gets wrong, so show the real record's DOI, title, authors and year. not_found: nothing matches in Crossref or OpenAlex; say it may be invented or garbled, and that books, reports and web pages are often not indexed. unavailable: the lookup failed, suggest trying again.
   - Always state a retraction.status of retracted, partially_retracted, expression_of_concern or corrected, with the notice dates; none_recorded means the source lists no notice, and not_checked means the source carries no retraction data.
   - A year-only mismatch can come from a preprint or a later edition having another year.
   - This checks bibliographic details only; do not claim it verified what a paper says.
6. If the call fails or the answer looks wrong, tell the user, then report it with `submit_feedback` (kind bug, tool `check_references`).
