check if references in a bibliography are real

You get a verdict for each reference: found, mismatch or not_found. Pass each reference as one string as written, up to 10 at a time, to check_references.

Each one is looked up in Crossref, the DOI system and OpenAlex. Not found means nothing matching exists, which often points to an invented or garbled citation. Books, reports, web pages and talks are often missing from these indexes, so there a not found means check by hand, not proof. Tool: check_references on https://citations.openkrill.app/mcp.

verify a DOI belongs to the right paper

You get a verdict saying whether the DOI matches the paper the reference describes, and the real record if it does not. Pass the DOI, or the full reference with its DOI, to check_references.

A mismatch means a real paper exists but the reference gets something wrong, such as a DOI that belongs to another paper. The real record is shown so the error is easy to fix. Only bibliographic details are compared. Tool: check_references on https://citations.openkrill.app/mcp.

find wrong year or author list in a citation

You get the real record next to your reference, so a wrong year, author list, title or DOI is easy to spot. Pass the reference as written, with authors, year, title, journal and DOI, to check_references.

The result is a mismatch verdict when a real paper exists but details differ. The check compares title, authors, year, journal and DOI only. It does not read the paper or judge whether its claims are true. Tool: check_references on https://citations.openkrill.app/mcp.

has this paper been retracted

You get the paper's retraction status: retracted, partially retracted, expression of concern or corrected. Pass the DOI or the title to check_references.

Status comes from notices that publishers and the Retraction Watch database register with Crossref. The check covers bibliographic details only and does not say whether a paper's claims are true. Tool: check_references on https://citations.openkrill.app/mcp.

look up a reference that has no doi

You get a verdict and the matching real record, if one exists, for a reference with no DOI. Pass its title, authors and year as one string to check_references.

A title alone also works. Up to 10 references can go in one call. If nothing matches, the verdict is not_found, which for a book, report, web page or talk is a prompt to check by hand, not proof. Tool: check_references on https://citations.openkrill.app/mcp.
