Frequently asked questions

Read text of a specific cfr section?

You get the current text of the section with its heading, statutory authority, amendment history, the date the eCFR is up to date as of and a link. Pass the CFR title number and section number.

A very long section is cut at a paragraph and flagged with nextOffset; call again with that offset to read on. The eCFR is an unofficial edition; the legal text is the Federal Register and the annual CFR. This is general information, not legal advice. Tool: get_cfr_section on https://rules.openkrill.app/mcp.

Which federal regulations cover a topic?

You get the best matching CFR sections, each with citation, heading, excerpt, agency and link. Pass 2 to 4 words to find and, if known, the CFR title to search in.

A section must hold every word. When nothing does, the search drops the last words and reports which query matched in matchedQuery. Then read a hit in full with get_cfr_section. It covers federal regulations only, not state law or court decisions. Tool: search_cfr on https://rules.openkrill.app/mcp.

What has an agency proposed on a topic this year?

You get matching Federal Register documents with title, type, agencies, publication date, abstract, effective date, comment deadline, the CFR parts changed and a link. Pass the words to find, document type proposed_rule and a publication date range.

Document type can also be rule, notice or presidential_document. Guidance documents that are not in the Federal Register are not covered. This is general information, not legal advice. Tool: search_federal_register on https://rules.openkrill.app/mcp.

Find final rules or executive orders on a subject?

You get the final rules or presidential documents on your subject, each with title, agencies, publication date, abstract, effective date and a link. Pass the words to find, a document type and optionally a date range.

Use type rule for final rules and presidential_document for executive orders. Results also list the CFR parts a document changes, so you can then read the affected section with get_cfr_section. Tool: search_federal_register on https://rules.openkrill.app/mcp.

Comment deadline and effective date for a federal rule?

You get the comment deadline and effective date where the document has one, plus the agency, publication date and the CFR parts it changes. Search the Federal Register by words and, if you know it, document type and date range.

Dates appear only for documents that state them. The eCFR is an unofficial edition, so check the current official text and ask a qualified lawyer before relying on a rule. Tool: search_federal_register on https://rules.openkrill.app/mcp.
