Travel advisory and airport delay tools compared

Travel advice comes from governments and airport delays come from air traffic control, so most tools cover one or the other. This page shows which tools cover both, which work outside the US and which an agent can call.

Checked by OpenKrill. 10 tools, one of them ours.

Short answer

  • Pick travel.state.gov and the FAA status site if a person is checking one US trip by hand; they are the sources the other tools read.
  • Pick FlightAware, Flightradar24 or FlightStats for delays and flight status outside the US.
  • Pick Flighty if you want your own flights tracked on your phone, with early delay alerts on Pro.
  • Pick Travel Check if an agent needs UK and US government advice plus US airport delays from one server with no key.
  • Pick Flight Queue MCP if you need security wait times or EU border queues.

Our test

We asked every hosted tool we could call without an account, a key or an install the same question, with the same inputs. Where that left our tool with no rival, we also ran the rivals a person can use, in their web form, their chat app or their API. Each tested row says how it was run. We wrote down the official answer for each input first, then scored each tool against it on . The official source an answer comes from is not scored against itself, and an input outside a tool's job is not sent to it, so that tool is scored on the inputs in its scope.

Country advice

The question: What is the current US State Department travel advisory level for this country?

  1. Saudi Arabia: Level 3: Reconsider Travel, updated 2026-10-12 (changed the day before this test). Official record: travel.state.gov, TAsTWs.xml, travel.state.gov, destination.sau.html.
  2. Venezuela: Level 3: Reconsider Travel, updated 2026-06-27. Official record: travel.state.gov, TAsTWs.xml, travel.state.gov, destination.ven.html.
  3. Mexico: Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, updated 2026-05-29. Official record: travel.state.gov, TAsTWs.xml, travel.state.gov, destination.mex.html.
  4. Japan: Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, updated 2025-05-15. Official record: travel.state.gov, TAsTWs.xml, travel.state.gov, destination.jpn.html.
  5. Italy: Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, updated 2026-09-10. Official record: travel.state.gov, TAsTWs.xml, travel.state.gov, destination.ita.html.
  • Pipeworx Travel Advisories MCP: 5 of 5 right, 5 answered, median 1.8 s. All 5 levels and dates match; it names Mexico 'Mexico Travel Advisory', as the feed title does. How it was run: Remote MCP tools/call advisory {country} on https://gateway.pipeworx.io/travel-advisories/mcp (no key).
  • Travel Check (ours): 5 of 5 right, 5 answered, median 7.3 s. All 5 levels and dates match the State Department feed, and each answer adds the UK FCDO alert; calls took 6 to 15 s. How it was run: Remote MCP tools/call get_travel_advice {country} on https://travel.openkrill.app/mcp.

Not tested:

  • FlightAware: Outside its job: a flight tracker with no country advice.
  • US State Department Travel Advisories: It is the official record the truth comes from, so a test would score it against itself.
  • Flighty: Outside its job: a phone app for flights, with no country advice.
  • Flightradar24: Outside its job: a flight tracker with no country advice; its MCP needs a paid key.
  • FAA National Airspace System Status: Outside its job: it shows US airport status, not country advice. Scored in the airport set below.
  • Flight Queue MCP: Needs an account: the MCP answers 401 invalid_token without a Flight Queue sign-in; it also has no country advice.
  • FAA Traffic Delays MCP Server (cyanheads): Outside its job: FAA airport delays only. Scored in the airport set below.
  • FlightStats: Outside its job: a flight status site with no country advice.

Airport delays

The question: Does the FAA list an active delay program, ground stop or closure at this US airport right now, and which kind? The official answer is the FAA airport status feed read at 13:42 UTC on 2026-10-13 (20:42 GMT+7). The list changes by the hour, so a recheck later will differ.

  1. BOS: Yes: Ground Delay Program, low ceilings, average 3 h 26 min. Official record: nasstatus.faa.gov.
  2. JFK: No FAA event listed. Official record: nasstatus.faa.gov.
  3. ORD: No FAA event listed. Official record: nasstatus.faa.gov.
  4. SNA: Yes: Airport Closure, NOTAM 10/016, daily 06:30 to 13:15 UTC until Oct 17. Official record: nasstatus.faa.gov.
  5. LAX: Yes: Airport Closure listing, NOTAM 05/277, closed only to non-scheduled transient general aviation without prior permission. Official record: nasstatus.faa.gov.
  • FAA Traffic Delays MCP Server (cyanheads): 5 of 5 right, 5 answered, median 1.2 s. All 5 match; it also parses the LAX NOTAM end year (2027) and labels LAX restrictions_only, which is clearer than a plain closure. How it was run: Remote MCP tools/call faa_delays_get_airport_status {airports:[code]} on https://faa-traffic-delays.caseyjhand.com/mcp.
  • Travel Check (ours): 5 of 5 right, 5 answered, median 12.9 s. All 5 match the FAA feed; slow (median 12.9 s), and it prints the LAX closure end as 'May 28' with no year, as the FAA feed does, so it reads like a past date. How it was run: Remote MCP tools/call get_airport_status {airport} on https://travel.openkrill.app/mcp.

Not tested:

  • FlightAware: Web app: its airport page draws delay data with scripts, so a plain page fetch shows no answer; the API needs a paid key.
  • US State Department Travel Advisories: Outside its job: country advice only, no airport delays.
  • Flighty: Phone app with no API.
  • Flightradar24: Needs a paid key for the MCP; its disruption index measures flight delays, not FAA programs.
  • FAA National Airspace System Status: It is the official record the truth comes from.
  • Pipeworx Travel Advisories MCP: Outside its job: country advice only, no airport delays.
  • Flight Queue MCP: Needs an account: the MCP answers 401 invalid_token without a sign-in.
  • FlightStats: Web app: its airport conditions page draws data with scripts, so a plain page fetch shows no answer; the API needs a key.

How we compared

On we asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude (API with web search) six questions about travel advisory and airport delay tools, three "what is the best tool" questions and three "which MCP server should I use" questions:

  1. What is the best tool to check government travel advisories and live airport delays?
  2. Which tool should I use to check travel warnings for a country and delays at an airport before a trip? Give me your top 3.
  3. What are the best travel advisory and flight delay checking tools right now?
  4. Which travel advisory MCP server should I use with my AI agent?
  5. What is the best MCP server for travel advisories and airport delays for Claude or ChatGPT?
  6. I want my AI agent to check government travel advice and airport status. Which MCP should I install?

24 answers came back with text we could read. "Named in AI answers" counts the answers that named the tool in their text or linked to it; pages an app read but did not cite do not count. The rows are the tools those answers named most, plus tools a reader would expect that the answers missed.

"Right in our test" comes from the measured test above. Every other fact comes from the tool's own page, docs or GitHub repo on the same day. Stars and commit dates change every week, so check the repo before you decide.

OpenKrill makes one of the tools on this page. Its row is sorted by the same count, tested with the same inputs and its limits are listed the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an MCP server for government travel advisories?

Yes. Travel Check reads UK FCDO and US State Department advice, and Pipeworx reads the State Department list. Neither replaces reading the official page before you travel.

Where do airport delay numbers come from?

In the US, from the FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center, which publishes ground stops and delay programs. FlightAware, Flightradar24 and FlightStats add data from other countries.

Can an agent book or change a flight with these tools?

No. Every tool on this page reads advice, delays or flight status. None of them books, changes or cancels a flight.
