Travel Check in ChatGPT
Travel advice and airports. The MCP server is https://travel.openkrill.app/mcp. No key. The steps below are only for ChatGPT. A call to get_travel_advice was checked against that server on 2026-10-01.
What this server answers
Check what the UK and US governments currently advise about a country, and see live delays and weather at an airport.
Ask "what is the travel advice for Thailand?", "what are the entry requirements for Japan?", "compare Mexico, Colombia and Peru" or "is JFK delayed right now?".
Travel Check reads the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) travel advice on GOV.UK, the US State Department travel advisories, the FAA National Airspace System status and the NOAA Aviation Weather Center.
Every answer shows the advisory level or alert, the date it was last reviewed, and a link to the official page.
UK advice is written for British citizens and US advice for US citizens, and the answer says so: entry rules and risks differ by passport, so check your own government's advice. It does not include visa rules for other nationalities.
It is not medical, legal or safety advice and not for flight planning. Advisories change, so confirm on the official page before you travel. FAA delay data covers US airports only.
UK content is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0, © Crown copyright. It stores nothing about you: answers are cached for a few hours, and the only lasting record is a daily count of calls per tool.
What it can do
- Shows the UK FCDO travel advice alert and last review date for a country
- Shows the US State Department advisory level, summary and date for a country
- Quotes the UK entry requirements, safety or health section on request
- Compares the UK and US advice for up to five countries at once
- Reports FAA delays and closures at a US airport
- Shows the latest weather observation and forecast for an airport by IATA or ICAO code
- Links every answer to the official source and says which citizens the advice is written for
Tools
get_travel_advice, Get travel advice. Use this when the user asks about travel advice, safety warnings, or entry requirements for a country, such as "is it safe to travel to Thailand?" or "what are the entry requirements for Japan?". Pass the country name or two-letter ISO code. Returns the UK FCDO alert (which parts of the country it advises against travelling to) with its last review date and latest change, and the US State Department advisory level, summary and date, with official links. Set section to entry-requirements, safety or health to include that part of the UK advice. UK advice is written for British citizens and US advice for US citizens, and the answer says so; it is not visa guidance for other passports. Government text only, not medical or safety advice.get_airport_status, Get airport status. Use this when the user asks about delays, closures or weather at an airport, such as "is JFK delayed?" or "what is the weather at Heathrow?". Pass the IATA code (JFK) or the ICAO code (EGLL). Returns active FAA delays, ground stops and closures for US airports with the reason and times, and the latest METAR observation (flight category, temperature, wind, visibility) and raw TAF forecast from the Aviation Weather Center. FAA delay data covers US airports only; for airports elsewhere only the weather is returned. For general information, not flight planning.compare_advisories, Compare travel advisories. Use this when the user wants the advice for several countries side by side, such as "compare Mexico, Colombia and Peru" or "which of these countries has the highest advisory level?". Pass one to five country names or ISO codes. Returns for each the UK FCDO alert and review date and the US State Department level and update date, with official links. Use get_travel_advice for the full text of one country. UK advice is for British citizens and US advice for US citizens.
Add Travel Check in ChatGPT
ChatGPT does not read a local config file. A custom MCP server is added in the product, and only after developer mode is on. These steps were checked against OpenAI's plugin connect guide and the ChatGPT MCP guide on 2026-10-01. Developer mode can be hidden by a workspace policy, so a Team or Enterprise admin may have to allow it first.
- Open ChatGPT settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode.
- Open ChatGPT plugins and select the plus button.
- Enter a name such as "Travel Check" and a one-line description of what you want it to answer.
- Under Connection, choose the public endpoint and paste
https://travel.openkrill.app/mcp. Include the/mcppath. Do not add a tunnel id: this server is already public. - Create the connection and review the tools ChatGPT lists. You should see
get_travel_advice,get_airport_status,compare_advisories. The feedback tools on the same server are optional and not required for the lookup. - Start a new conversation, add the connection from the tools menu, and ask: What is the current travel advice for Thailand?
No API key and no OAuth client id are required. The server answers without a login. Calls are limited per network and per day, and a limit comes back as a tool error rather than a partial answer. If the tool list is stale after a server change, open the connection and select Refresh, then start a new conversation.
The ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI and IDE extension share a different config. In the desktop app, open Settings, then MCP servers, choose Add server, select Streamable HTTP, and paste the same URL. In ~/.codex/config.toml the equivalent is a table named mcp_servers.travel with url = "https://travel.openkrill.app/mcp". ChatGPT on the web does not read that file. A published directory listing is also a different path: this page is the developer-mode connection, not a claim that Travel Check is already in the ChatGPT directory.
Treat the server as untrusted until you have read a few answers. A remote MCP server sees the arguments the model sends. Travel Check is read-only and documents what it sends onward on the privacy page.
